Europe is vast and covers a myriad cultures and histories. There are so many fantastic European cities that it is hard to choose where to take that much-needed hotel break. Every city has its share of historic architecture and fascinating art and culture. Some cities need a long weekend hotel break and several visits to feel like you've seen everything. Hotel breaks in big cities such as London, Berlin, Moscow and Rome require a strict itinerary and serious planning if you want to fit in as many sites as possible. Hotel breaks in cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Athens, Dublin, Venice and Barcelona are ideal for long leisurely strolls and you can cover most of the sites on foot.
Hotels in popular sightseeing cities such as Rome, Prague, St Petersburg and Vienna can be extremely busy in the tourist season. If you would like a hotel break somewhere quieter, try one of the Eastern European cities that are only just becoming tourist destinations, such as Vilnius, Riga, Warsaw, or Tallinn. Sometimes, heading away from the capital city can take you off the main tourist track - try accommodation in Glasgow or Manchester, Cologne, Seville, Frankfurt or Florence for a taste of a country's culture without the excessive crowds.
If you want sunshine on your city hotel break then go for one of the southern cities such as Rome, Naples, Madrid, Seville, Malaga or Athens. For hotels in more temperate climes head to Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Hamburg, or Helsinki. And in winter, book a hotel in the snow and have a magical fairytale experience in Salzburg, Prague, Vienna or Stockholm. Even if the snow fails to arrive there are fabulous Christmas markets to visit.
When you are looking for accommodation some cities are cheaper than others but they all offer a wide range of hostels, hotel chains, independent hotels and boutique hotels. From B&Bs and budget hostels to mid-range 2 and 3 stars through to luxury 4 and 5 star hotels you will find a huge amount of accommodation suited to your needs.
